Leopard Gecko genetics calculator

Leopard geckos are the reverse of ball pythons: a short list of proven single genes, and a very long list of line-bred colour and pattern. The calculator covers the 19 that inherit predictably and names the 43 that don't.

What this calculator can and can't tell you

  • The three albino lines don't mix. Bell, Rainwater and Tremper are separate genes, so pairing a Bell to a Tremper gives you normal-looking double hets, not albinos. The calculator treats them as three genes because that's what they are.
  • Enigma carries Enigma Syndrome, a neurological condition, in every animal that has it. Lemon Frost is linked to an inherited skin cancer. Both are in the calculator because leaving them out wouldn't make them go away, and both are flagged.
  • Morphpedia records no allelic complexes in leopard geckos, so unlike ball pythons every gene here crosses independently.
  • Tangerine, hypo, bold stripe, carrot tail and most of what actually sets a price are line-bred. They're listed below, and no honest calculator gives you a percentage for them.
Enigma is a special case. Enigma Syndrome is a neurological condition — circling, star-gazing, loss of balance — and Morphpedia records it as affecting every Enigma to some degree. The odds below tell you how many hatchlings would carry the gene; they can't tell you how badly.
Lemon Frost is a special case. Lemon Frost is linked to iridophoroma, an inherited skin cancer. The calculator will work out the odds if you ask it to, but this is a known welfare problem rather than a rare complication.
Snow (Mack) is a special case. Morphpedia lists Mack Snow as sex linked. The trait odds here are right, but as with Banana in ball pythons, a Punnett square over ordinary genes can't tell you how the sexes will split.

Traits no calculator can predict

MorphMarket Morphpedia classes these as polygenic or structural. They're real traits and they set prices, but they don't sit on a single gene, so no Punnett square predicts them. Anything quoting you a percentage for harlequin or flame is guessing.
