Axolotls have the cleanest genetics of any animal on this site — four classic recessive pigment mutants, each at its own locus, documented in a laboratory since 1957. The complication isn't the maths. It's that the most expensive axolotls sold aren't genetic at all.

What this calculator can and can't tell you

  • Albino, melanoid, axanthic and white are four separate recessive genes at four separate loci, so they cross independently and stack freely. An animal can carry all four.
  • White albino is not a gene, it's a pairing of two — albino plus leucistic. Pick both and the calculator names it for you.
  • Copper is its own recessive locus rather than a shade of albino, so copper bred to albino gives normal-looking double hets, not visual babies.
  • GFP is a transgene, inserted at one site, which makes it a single dominant locus with a real homozygous form. Two GFP parents can throw a GFP that breeds 100% GFP.
  • Mosaics, chimeras and fireflies are the ones to understand before you spend money. None of them are inherited — a mosaic is two fused embryos, a firefly is a surgical graft — so none of them can be bred for and none of them can be carried. They're named below and kept out of the maths.
  • This is the one species here not sourced from MorphMarket. The stock centre has maintained and published these lines for nearly seventy years, which is better evidence than any trade list.
Mosaic is a special case. A mosaic is two embryos that fused, not a gene. The animal carries two different sets of cells, which is why the patches land where they land and why no two are alike. Breeding a mosaic gives you ordinary babies from whichever cells formed its gonads — there is no het mosaic and no odds to quote.
Chimera is a special case. Same story as mosaic and usually more dramatic — a clean split down the midline, one colour each side. It happens at the egg, not in the genes, so it can't be bred for or carried.
Firefly is a special case. Fireflies are made, not bred. An embryonic tail graft puts GFP tissue on a non-GFP animal. The GFP itself is heritable; that particular animal's two-tone look is not.
Lavender is a special case. Widely reported as recessive and widely bred as if it is, but it isn't one of the mutants the stock centre maintains, so it's named here rather than given odds. If your own pairings prove it out, add it as your own trait and the calculator will cross it.
Copper is a special case. Copper is its own recessive locus, not a shade of albino. A copper bred to an albino gives normal-looking double hets, the same way two different albino lines do in boas.

Traits no calculator can predict

Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center, University of Kentucky classes these as polygenic or structural. They're real traits and they set prices, but they don't sit on a single gene, so no Punnett square predicts them. Anything quoting you a percentage for harlequin or flame is guessing.
